Feature Artist, December 2024:
'Mike Sleeman'
Please come into the Iluka Emporium during December to view the works of Mike Sleeman.
Mike is originally from Melbourne, a long time Gold Coaster and current resident of Iluka. He will have an eclectic selection of art on display at the Emporium.
Mike says " I am inspired by the likes of Christopher O'Doherty (aka Reg Mombassa), Max Meldrum, Leon Pericles, Richard Estes and Camille Corot, my recent work has fallen back to a more illustrative style borne out of the time I spent as a graphic designer in The Big M. Since those early days I have worked as an art teacher on the Goldie, recently retiring to Iluka where I have rediscovered a passion for mark making.
Acrylic and gouache are my media of choice, which I find quite forgiving of my technical naivety. A connection to the water, sea and ocean can be seen in most of my subject matter - surfing, in particular, has always been a powerful motivator for me. I find beauty in the mundane objects which fill our lives - their textures, hues, shapes and shadows need no embellishment to command visual attention. Whilst some of my subject matter has ventured into the provocative, most remains concerned with the aesthetic allure of everyday items. I am writing this bio to the sounds of The Atlantics - Gen Z and Millenials will probably have to google that! I have had work in the Coldstream Gallery." Mike can be contacted on 0432347865.
