"Below The Surface"
Our Feature Artist for February 2025 is the talented Kerrie Speirs, exhibiting 'Below the surface' an exhibition of
water stories both real and imagined.
In the artists words.....
It's no mystery that water is life. The source of all creation. The force that flows around us & within us, creating & sustaining life on earth.
I live by the water in the beautiful Clarence Valley on Yaegl country, here the rivers shape the land & meets the sea forming a magnificent coastal environment. My art practice often involves engaging and exploring local natural
environments. My series of water stories has naturally evolved from my relationship with and response to the biodiversity of life that thrives in these environments, which of course includes the human being.
Stories inspired by encounters with wildlife whilst diving below the surface of the ocean, the joy and rejuvenation felt after a swim with others.
Living in the moment dependent on the weather, the sun, the rain, the moon, the tides and my shared
place within these stories and cycles we call life. When I spend time by the water, river or ocean, I feel small yet humbled, fearful yet grateful, other yet connected. Water has become a creative muse inspiring me
as a visual story teller. The mystery of what lies below the surface excites my creative imagination and gifts me with the desire to take the plunge both physically and conceptually into art making.
My exhibition 'Below the surface' is a colourful, eclectic mix of paintings, works on paper and handmade forms. I work with multiple art mediums when creating. Experimental & expressive art methods are the first layers of my artworks. Building layers, form and subject is intentional & playful. Best labelled as symbolic abstract
expressions or figurative abstract landscapes, you decide.
As an artist I feel a sense of completion when the viewer looks twice into my
artworks. Seeking meaning, finding familiarity and creating a story of their own
through viewing the visual arts.
I hope you enjoy! 20% of my profits will be donated to Northern Rivers Sea Bird &
Turtle Recue Hospital, Ballina NSW.
